Popular app Snapchat whose 4.6 Million username and mobile number was hacked earlier this month, issued a statement, Snapchat also updates its mobile client with new security improvement. Now Snapchat users can opt out of linking mobile number with usernames.
Earlier this month 4.6 million username along with mobile Number was made public in a csv file. The security bug which was discovered back in August 2013, later in December API which had loophole was also leaked. After leaking API hackers within Days hacked the API of snapchat and accessed user information and also released it publicly.
Snapchat was aware of this loophole and they didn’t did anything, now after leaking the data, company released an statement after almost 7 days.
Snapchat in a blog post says :
This morning we released a Snapchat update for Android and iOS that improves Find Friends functionality and allows Snapchatters to opt-out of linking their phone number with their username. This option is available in Settings > Mobile #.This update also requires new Snapchatters to verify their phone number before using the Find Friends service.
Our team continues to make improvements to the Snapchat service to prevent future attempts to abuse our API. We are sorry for any problems this issue may have caused you and we really appreciate your patience and support.

Snapchat team says sorry about the data breach but didn’t apologized users for their mobile number been leaked. Snapchat doesn’t seem to care about their user data. If they cared then they have patched the bug months back. But now after the leak company has issued an update to its iOS and Android apps , in which users can opt out for mobile number linking.
