The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is an entrance exam conducted to assess an individual’s academic ability to be ready to undertake and successfully complete the nursing or allied health school. TEAS Test: Key Details
The TEAS exam comprises of 170 questions formed from four different sections. These sections are Reading, Mathematics, Science, and English and Language Usage. These areas are specifically chosen to test the basic skills of the individuals who are required to understand and grasp the further academic courses. These 170 questions come in the form of multiple-choice format with four options. The composite time to answer them is 209 minutes, or 3 hours and 29 minutes. Out of these 170 questions, 150 questions are scored and used during grading. The ATI uses these 20 questions on a tentative basis to see if they are worthy to be asked during the future exams. TEAS Test: Four Sections
- Reading: Itis conducted to assess the individual’s ability to read and understand the given aspects. These aspects include paragraph reading, interpretation, maps, labels, graphs, charts.The total time allotted to this part is 64 minutes, and the individuals are expected to solve a total of 53 questions in this time. The 47 scored questions are further divided into three parts:
- Key Ideas and Details: This part has 22 scored questions and is mainly focused on the aspects like summarizing a text, identifying the information given, making up logical conclusions to the given paragraph, and so on.
- Craft and Structure: This part has 14 scored questions and deals with aspects, such as distinguishing between facts, biases, opinions and stereotypes, explaining meaning of words and phrases, explain the ideas of the writer.
- Integration of Knowledge and Ideas: This part has 11 scored questions and the individuals have to work on aspects like identifying sources of media, evaluating argument and claims, and so on.
- Mathematics: It determines the individual’s ability to data interpretation, measurement, algebra usage and also performance of numerous mathematical operations based on numbers.There are a total of 36 questions: 32 are scoring based questions and 4 are non-scoring ones. This sectionis divided into two sub-sections:
- Numbers and Algebra: A total of 23 scored questions are asked in this section, which includes some aspects like fractions, decimals, percentages, rational numbers, expressions, variables, ratios. They are used to perform operations, such as conversion, equation solving, comparing, estimation, and etc.
- Measurement and Data: It has a total of 9 scored questions, which cover some areas, such as evaluating, interpretation, conversion, calculation of charts, graphs, tables, statistics, geometric qualities, and etc.
- Science: It is set to assess the individual’s knowledge pertaining to life science, scientific reasoning, human body, as well as physical and earth science. The questions asked in this part are based on these topics.The number of scored questions asked in this section are 47 and non-scoring are 6 making up a total of 53 questions. They are to be solved in a composite time of 63 minutes. The three sub-sections of this area are as follows:
- Human Anatomy and Physiology: This part has a total of 32 questions based on details about human anatomy and physiology. The topics included in this section are general anatomy and physiology of human, circulatory system, respiratory system, digestive system, cardiac system, nervous system, skeletal system, muscular system, reproductive system, endocrine system, immune system, genitourinary system and hematological system.
- Life and Physical Science: This section has 8 scored questions and covers areas of basic macromolecules in biological system, chromosomes, genes and DNA, Mendel’s laws of heredity, basic atomic structure, characteristics properties of substances, changing states of matter and chemical reactions.
- Scientific Reasoning: This part has 7 scored questions based on scientific measurements and laboratory measurement tools, scientific explanations using logic and evidence, relationships among events, objects and processes and analysis and design of a scientific investigation.
- English and Language Usage: It is focused on English grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure and contextual words. 28 questions are needed to be solved within 28 minutes of time.There are three sub-sections in this part:
- Conventions of Standard English: It consists of 9 scored questions focusing on English spelling, punctuation, and sentence structures.
- Knowledge of Language: It comes with 9 scored questions focusing on English grammar, formal and informal language, basic elements of writing process and paragraph.
